Finding a backup solution for mac OS X
I’m trying to find a good personal backup solution for my PowerBook. One to go with a firewire/usb2 external hard drive. There are several programs available out there; here’s a few I’m considering:
- Silverkeeper from LaCie (free)
- iMsafe (free for now, public beta)
- SyncupX ($20)
- ChronoSync ($30)
- Retrospect ($100?)
Sites offering product overviews:
- software search on apple.com
- Overview of OS X backup programs
- Versiontracker listing of system utilities
There’s also a backup feature for .mac users, but I don’t really feel the need to subscribe to a .mac account.
Do you have any experience with some of the applications listed above? Any recommendations? Do leave a comment!

Have you thought about using Carbon Copy Cloner? http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/7032
or De ja vu? http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/9221
I use carbon copy cloner to periodically clone my PowerBooks internal drive to an external FW drive and it works fine.
